Tragedy struck Andhra Pradesh early on Thursday as gas leaked from a chemical unit in the city, leaving one minor among 7 people dead, more than 70 left unconscious, with at least five sleeping hamlets affected unaware as most were still in bed.
People fainting on the roads
Initial casualties included an 8-year-old girl. One man is reported to have died when he jumped into a well while another person fell off the balcony of his house as the gas leak at the LG Polymers unit located at RR Venkatapuram near Gopalapatnam spread across the five sleepy villages around 2.30 a.m.
In scenes reminiscent of the Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984, the streets and hospitals of Visakhapatnam were filled with people in a panic, scared to breathe and unable to fathom the silent tragedy that struck them.
According to Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation officials, the tragedy took place when the chemical unit, closed due to the lockdown, was being restarted on Thursday morning. The gas stored in tanks began leaking and spread in a radius of 3 km. Officials have zeroed in on two gases, styrene and pentine, as the likely causes for the accident.
Early morning sights included people lying unconscious on the streets and dead cattle by the roadside. People, with children strung over their shoulders, ran in panic towards hospitals. Ambulances rushed to the area and transported 70 unconscious people to the King George hospital.
A large number of those hospitalized are children.
Eyewitnesses said that the incident took place around 2.30 a.m. when people were fast asleep in their homes. All of a sudden people in surrounding areas woke up with a sense of breathlessness, terrible itching, and burning sensation in their eyes.
Panic-stricken they rushed out of their homes, only to collapse. Several cattle and livestock also succumbed to the poisonous gas pervading the air.
The impact of the tragedy was reduced to some extent as the plant operatives immediately alerted the authorities following which the district administration swung into action, an official said.
The surrounding areas within a radius of 3 km have been cleared of people and arrangements made for feeding around 7,500 people who have been asked to vacate their homes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are keeping abreast of all details. Modi has started a meeting with NDMA officials to monitor the situation.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy enquired about the gas leak incident in Visakhapatnam and directed the district officials to take every possible step to save lives and bring the situation under control.
The Chief Minister will proceed to Vizag to take stock of the situation and visit the hospital where the affected area being treated. Modi tweeted that he has spoken to officials in the ministry of home affairs. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs G. Kishan Reddy is also monitoring the situation.
Officials said that the leak has been sealed and the gas dissipates fast and so the death toll may not increase substantially.
LG Polymers is among India’s leading manufacturers of polystyrene and expandable polystyrene. The plant located at Visakhapatnam belongs to the Mumbai-based LG Polymers India, which is part of the South Korean group LG Chemical.
Originally set up in 1961, as Hindustan Polymers for manufacturing polystyrene and its copolymers, the company was merged with McDowell & Co Ltd of UB Group in 1978. It ultimately became part of the South Korean group LG Chemical, in 1997.

Visva Bharati University Professors support CAA...
VBU professors support CAA as Mamata Banerjee goes all out against citizenship law
Professor Dulal Chandra Ghosh said, "We, the Indians, totally follow this decision. Our brothers who resided in East and West Pakistan in that period were severely tortured, women are brutally tortured and killed, and they lost their properties as well as their souls. Those people, who came back after leaving all of their things, need their personal security as well as respect. We must remember it."

A few professors of Visva Bharati University in Birbhum, West Bengal have extended their support to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) amidst protests against the law across the state. A signature campaign by many across the country has been supported by these central university professors who are even vocal about it.
Professor Dulal Chandra Ghosh, Member of Executive Council of Visva Bharati, said, "I wholeheartedly support CAA. I support CAA because the national movement of freedom struggle is also entangled with this Act. Muhammad Ali Jinnah demanded a separate country for Muslims. His demand was ultimately fulfilled and India was divided into three parts."
"As a result of this, a large number of Hindus left their properties and came back with nothing but clothes. When those ill-treated people came to India, they needed a shelter to stay here. So, they need their citizenship. It was also decided from the Liaquat-Nehru pact that the minorities should be protected with honour and respect in their respective areas," he said.
We must remember it. They also fought for India's freedom struggle. If CAA provides for their right to live in India, we are going to support this Act wholeheartedly."
He concluded, "I think that majority of the teaching staffs and employees will support this Act because the CAA is for the outsiders and the refuges and has nothing to do with the Indian Muslims or Indian citizens."

Finally PM Modi has deposited Rs 15 lakhs in each and every Indian’s account
Finally PM Modi has deposited Rs 15 lakhs in each and every Indian’s account
Indian currency worth more than 15 lakhs has been handed over to each and every individual. You may be surprised and shocked, but yes, the milestone has been finally achieved. But it should be noted that the amount is not directly deposited into your bank account. Let me explain how Modi has fulfilled his promise to 1.5 billion India• Soon after terrorist sympathiser Zakir Naik fled from India, crores of his properties were seized by the Indian government.
• When the stupidity of Pakistan crossed all limits, India launched a surgical strike and pushed it into a state of paralysis. Speciality of this attack was that not even a single Para Commando got injured.
• The gangster who had piled up crores of black money by extorting Indians started witnessing his bad days. Yes, it is none other than Dawood Ibrahim. More than Rs 15000 crores worth properties of Dawood was seized by UAE on the request of PM Modi. Weeks ago, Rs 45,000 crores of assets of Dawood was seized by United Kingdom.
• All of a sudden, the grave of terrorists started to increase in Jammu and Kashmir after the Indian Army, CRPF and J&K police decided to hunt down the terrorists who were sent by Pakistan.
• The suppressed voice got prominence when Lt Colonel Purohit was released after 9 years. This boosted lakhs of defence personnel of India.
• Women empowerment was given wings when innocent Sadhvi Pragya was released. She was falsely fixed in a bomb blast which was carried out by Pakistani terrorists.
• NGOs that were using its funds to convert Hindus and create anti-India sentiments had to lose its license.
• Lakhs of Muslim women got justice when Modi government decided to end triple talaq and also decided to act tough on Nikah Halala.
• Indian culture got wings when the President, Prime Minister and Chief Ministers started to celebrate Navratri festival royally. Previously, other political leaders hesitated to celebrate this as they feared that this it would hurt vote bank politics.
• Any other government would have tumbled in front of the rogue nation China, but Modi government suppressed the Chinese and forced them to step back from Doklam area.
Now you will realise that PM Modi has already deposited Rs 15 lakh in each Indian’s account. Now some may say that this is nonsense but I will say that this is full of sense. If PM Modi hadn’t taken charge of India in 2014, several patriots would have ended up in jail like Lt Col Purohit and Sadhvi Pragya Singh. If Modi wouldn’t have become the PM, free speech and freedom of expression would have been under threat.
People are questing why the government is not decreasing the fuel price even though the crude oil is all time low. But they aren’t saying why the government is distributing wheat, kerosene and sugar at subsidised rates.
What is hilarious is that the people who are targeting PM Modi on petty and foolish issues are the ones who send their kids to office/colleges in expensive bikes and cars. The same people are asking the Indians to accept Sonia Gandhi as their ‘Bahu’, Nehru as their ‘uncle’, Mayawati as their ‘sister’ and Mamata Banerjee as their ‘didi’. But these don’t want PM Modi to be treated as the ‘Son of India’.
Strange isn’t it?
PM Modi has delivered more than what was promised by him. It is now the duty of each and every citizens to take India to further heights and restore the glory that was before the invasion of Mughals and Britishers.
Jai Hind!!!

Who helped Congress win additional 16 seats which could have gone to BJP
BJP would have easily won 115 seats!!! It’s not Congress, you’ll be shocked to know who defeated those 16 BJP candidates...
More than 10 renowned exit polls had said that PM Modi’s BJP will win by a thumping margin. But at the end of the day, BJP ended up securing just 99 seats in Gujarat. Although, BJP will be forming the government, one question that haunts everyone is why BJP’s seats decreased significantly? Is this because the Modi magic has lost its impact like it had during the Uttar Pradesh elections?
It was not Congressmen, but BJP was dumped by their own men!!!
Can you believe that 5 lakh people had opted the (None of the above)NOTA facility? These 5 lakhs voters were perhaps the voters of BJP and this made the biggest impact on the Gujarat elections.
In several places, BJP lost with few hundreds of margin. If the NOTA was reduced than the BJP candidates would have easily cruised ahead to victory.
16 seats were such that BJP clearly lost due to NOTA. The reason for an increase in NOTA is that the trader class, Patidars and Dalits didn’t vote for any party. The reason is clear; they were hurt by BJP. At some places, BJP had done mistakes and in some other constituencies, Congress was successful in misleading the people.
1. In Chota Udaipur, the NOTA is 5870 and the margin of defeat for BJP is less than 1000 votes.
2. In Dangs, NOTA is 2184 and the margin of defeat for the BJP candidate is not more than 800 votes.
3. In Dasada, the margin of defeat was less than 4000 votes but the NOTA was 3797. This could also have been an easy win for BJP.
4 In Deodar, the margin of defeat was less than 1000 votes but the NOTA was 2988.
5. In Dhanera constituency, BJP lost with just over 2000 votes whereas the NOTA was 2341 votes.
6. In Jamjodhpur, BJP lost for less than 3000 votes and the NOTA was 3214 votes.
7. In Kaprada, BJP lost by a minor margin. yes, Congress won with a lead of 170 votes but the NOTA was 3868 votes. BJP candidate Raut Madhubhai Bapubhai will never forget this defeat, so close but so far.
8. In Mansa, BJP lost with less than 600 votes but the NOTA was 3000 votes.
9. In Modasa, the margin of defeat was just below 200 votes and the NOTA filed was 3515 votes.
10. IN Morbi, the margin of loss and the NOTA was almost the same.
11. In Morva Hadaf, BJP lost by below 400 0 votes but the NOTA was nearly 5000 votes.
12. In Sojitra, BJP lost by just over 2000 votes but the NOTA was 3112.
13. In Talaja, BJP lost with just over 1000 votes the NOTA was closer to 3000 votes.
14. In Wankaner, BJP lost with just over 1000 votes whereas the NOTA was over 3000 votes.
15. In Lunawada, BJP lost with a margin of 4000 votes and even the NOTA margin was almost the same.
